I wanted him to attend a small school, but now that he is in his second year at Columbus I must say I was misguided by its prior reputation. The Principal is fantastic with the children and the parents. My son is now being introduce to what he/she has to do in order to prepare for college and complete high school. I love the Academy set up they have at Columbus. It almost feels like a small school in a big school for my son and I. It is a bad school. The academics are despicable. Most programs are unavailable! Columbus did not do a great job in preparing me for college. What is review for most students is brand new to me. In certain math classes we were not allowed to have a graphic calculator, which is needed through out college. The classes are over booked and most teachers don't care. The new principal is a graduate and she has been very helpful to students. Columbus offers a lot of AP classes, and has great sports teams. The football and boys basketball teams are great! The football team sends a lot of kids to college! The school has a bad reputation because they don't hide things that go on. But, kids go to Ivy league schools from Columbus every year. Most of the teachers are excellent. The bottom line is that if a student works hard, like my kids, they will do well. The kids that don't do well choose not to. I wouldn't send my kids to any other school in the Bronx. Two have already graduated from Columbus and are attending very good schools (Vermont and Wisconsin), and a third is in school. The Actor John McGiver was my English teacher. Ann Bankcroft ( Italiano) was a student. As for myself the foundations of my personality and understanding of my life were formed here. Many of us students were children of imigrants from various cultures of Europe. We learned at Columbus to understand our differences. This set the foundation for us to strive toward a better world. 'This is what I remember'”
