Long Island City High School Reviews

A excellent school I have had 4 generations that have gone to this school and we absoultly love it. 5 STARS

Both my daughters graduated from LIC ('06 and '08). Now my son is starting 9th grade in Sept. 2008. I guess the third time's a charm! LIC offers a wide range of programs that cover a lot of topics, even if the high school directory currently only shows 4. The Academies have also helped kids so they don't have to run from the 1st floor to the 6th in between classes. The few downsides are the overcrowding and really staggered schedule from some students but the diversity outweighs these problems. They also have a wide range of sports and one of the few schools with a pool so kids can learn to swim.

I am a student at LICHS. I am going to be a junior and I really like the school. It's in great, safe neighborhood, and transportation is really easy, the closest subway is 5 blocks from the school and the closest bus is right on the school block. People have said it is a bad school because of low graduation rates, when I, a student there have not met one kid that has dropped out. Its a good school with a lot of tivities. The downside is the security guards an be rude.

I graduated from LIC in 2003. Over all it is a very good school w/ plenty of Advance Placement classes and extracurricular activities, more than other high schools in my opinion. Most of my classmates went of to college, ranging from Cooper Union to Vanderbilt to the CUNY/SUNY colleges. This high school offers plenty of opportunities to succeed but students just need to take advantage of them.

As a parent with a sophmore at LIC and an 8th grader who plans to enter next year, I am very happy with the school. Yes, it is overcrowded but it has downsized over recent years and the school day has been made shorter. Very few public high schools offer such a variety of coursework and extracurricular activities. The building is beautiful and, most importantly, safe. Many students go on to very good colleges and often leave LIC with college credits already earned.

This school is horrible, the only good thing about it is the building. There aren't that many people who graduate from this school anf those who do end up nowhere. There is virtually no one who graduates from this school that is in a top college and the guidance counselors here are deplorable. Your best bet is to go anywhere but here

I went to L.I.C. , i graduated 5 years ago , all i have to say to sum it up is that it was great all of it , the teachers , the swim team :) , the students that go there , the modern building itself , the straberry lemon juice in the lunch room :)

I think the school is overcrowded. I think teachers should do their job.

My daughter is excelling at LIC she is very happy and is starting her junior year in Sept.she is studying her dream of writing and journalism and loves the school.I find the teachers to be caring and very interested in helping the students realize their dreams. My daughter travels there by subway and bus but finds it an easy commute and based on the quality of schools in our neighbourhood LIC is beyond compare. There are programs for orchestra, opera, culinary and arts and humanities which is the program my daughter is in and the Bulldogs rock! I am currently looking for schools for her sister who is graduating middle school in 2 yrs and is talented vocally the opera institute might serve her well.By far LIC is a great school and 2 graduates this year received scholarships from Jerry Seinfeld.I think that my daughter will graduate with great experiences!

L.I.C. has gotten a bad rap for many years. There are many wonderful teachers here (I speak from experience...I'm a former student & graduate). The problem with LIC isn't the teachers, or the programs offered, it's the students. They choose not to take advantage of the programs and classes offered. Most would rather hang out outside by the local stores. An education at LIC is what you make of it, seize the opportunities offered. The drop out rate for this school is extremely high which I am sure is what contributes to the schools poor reviews and test scores. But, take a look at the scores of the students in the college prep courses and honors classes, I am sure that they're above average. LIC is a wonderful school - for the students who actually WANT to be there.

The most endearing feature to me is that a person answers the school' main phone number, not a machine. Hallelujah! This is a great school. My son attends and despite what my younger daughter thinks about shadowing her brother, I would like her to attend also. There are Regents, AP and SAT prep classes during the week and on weekends for free. There are a mess of sports teams and club activities. The teachers and Asst. Prins. are fabulous. The Prin. himself is a doll. Take it from me: I am vociferous when it comes to my kid's education and well-being, and I am totally ok with LICHS. Go Bulldogs!

This school may be bad, or good to many people. As a result the school has many negatives and positives. The negatives are that it has a low graduation rate, and that the transportation is in a place where it is hard to get to. Also this school is overcrowding. This school also has positives as well. The teachers care about you, and this school has a good diversity.

I am no parent. I go to the school. This is a great school. Just because of the bad neighborhood doesn't mean its bad. It has honors classes and college classes and has a lot to offer from music to cooking. Actually the school location is awesome. It is close to 6 bus stops and the Manhattan Skyline from the lunch room is breathtaking.

in the beginning I though the school was not so good and I try to place my daughter in another school. then I star doing some research and my surprise was that this school LICHS is one of the good school in my neighborhood so now I am very happy for my daughter she assist this school there are very good teacher and beautiful program than will help her in the future

this school is great! It has many activities for a student to do and really opens up opportunities for college. Im really happy how this school is doing and i strongly recommend for any child to go there!

The school is obvious new, roomy, airy and nicely layout but I don t let that influence me in my decision to add LIC HS to my child s top 5 list of schools to apply for. My child received a first hand look into the school when she attended a prep class last summer. She likes the teachers, the school and the curriculum that is offer to students. This school has the potential to be a great school. Here are some negatives: travel is not that simple, the school is located in area that is run down. Public transportation to the school is long. My child had to take a bus, subway, then bus or walk the last mile from the subway. The school accepts local kids, which maybe a reason why the graduation rate is low.

My child is excelling and comfortable in LIC. She has learned much and feels safe there. The guards are very kind and do not treat the children harshly. There are very good activities and my daughter is challenged academically. I am pleased.

This school has been my son's home for four years, he has passed all state tests with 90's and above, the teachers and staff make it easy for the parents to get involved ot help out with their childs progress. I recommend this school for many Parents who dont know where they want their children to go.

This school has many great programs, atleast when i attended. I always saw many students attending many school activities, that brought out their talents. Ms Millers class?

I am not here to say LIC is a bad school. This school is very advanced, but teachers and other faculty are not. The school is increasing their security but not as well as it should be. I went to this school for 4yrs and just graduated 2003.

This school is a good one, however they do need to concentrate on students who are moving on after high school. Also student counslers need more improvment.

it is a very fun school that ha s many special programs to offer if your child has that special dream they can take a course here to teach it to them. This is the best school I have ever gone to and ever will go to.
